Accomac is the county seat of Accomack County, Virginia, with a population of 526 as of the 2020 census. The town's history is deeply rooted in the Eastern Shore's colonial past. Accomack County itself was established as one of Virginia's eight original shires in 1634, and after the shore's division into two counties in 1663, the court eventually settled at a location originally called Matompkin. A brick courthouse was constructed in 1756, and the surrounding settlement became known as Accomack Courthouse. In 1786, seven prominent residents including Richard Drummond petitioned the Virginia House of Delegates to incorporate the town, which was granted and named Drummond in honor of its chief landholder. The town flourished during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a ferry terminus across Chesapeake Bay, and many of its historic structures from this prosperous era reflect late Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival architectural styles. During the Civil War, Union General Henry H. Lockwood occupied the Eastern Shore and established headquarters in the rectory of St. James Episcopal Church. Though some churches suffered damage when used as military stables and housing, the town escaped with minimal destruction. The arrival of the railroad in the late nineteenth century brought steady economic growth, though residents successfully resisted an 1895 referendum to relocate the county seat to the newly established town of Parksley. By 1893, the United States Post Office Department had officially renamed the town Accomac, derived from a Native American word meaning "on the other side."
