Acton is a town in York County, Maine, with a population of 2,671 at the 2020 census. The town comprises three villages: Acton, Miller Corner, and South Acton. It is part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metropolitan area and covers 41.11 square miles, with Hussey Hill marking its highest point at 1,051 feet above sea level. Notably, Hussey Hill is Maine's southernmost 1,000-foot elevation.
Acton's history began when land was sold in 1668 from Newichawannock Chief Captain Sunday to trader Francis Small. Originally called Hubbardstown Plantation, the area was incorporated as Shapleigh in 1785 and named for Nicholas Shapleigh. Acton was set off from Shapleigh and incorporated on March 6, 1830, taking its name from Acton, England. The town was first settled at Acton village in 1776 by Benjamin Kimens, Clement Steele, and John York, all from York.
Water power sites attracted mill development throughout the nineteenth century, including gristmills, sawmills, a hemp mill, a carding mill, a felt mill, a tannery, and a shoe factory. A vein of silver was discovered in 1877 near Goding Creek, prompting mining operations during the 1880s. Though the soil was largely poor for farming, ridge areas produced good crops. In 1866, the Shapleigh & Acton Agricultural Society was established, founding an annual fair and cattle show that continues today as the Acton Fair, held each late summer at the Acton Fairground.
