Adams is a small city in southern Mower County, Minnesota, located in Adams Township near the Iowa border. The village was platted on January 30, 1868, by Selah Chamberlain and officially incorporated nearly two decades later on March 2, 1887. The community developed steadily through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, establishing key infrastructure including a water works system in 1897, a volunteer fire department called Adams Hose Co. No. 1 in 1898, and a sewage system in 1902. A two-room public school built in 1869 was expanded to four rooms as the population grew, and overcrowding was relieved when a Catholic school opened in 1903, drawing roughly half the public school students. The sewage system was updated again in 1958. Today, Adams is home to the varsity fields for teams in the Southland school district, which includes Southland High School. The city sits along State Highway 56, which serves as Main Street and connects Adams to Austin, the county seat, seventeen miles to the northwest, and to Le Roy twelve miles to the east-southeast. According to the 2020 census, Adams had a population of 683, reflecting a decline from 787 residents in 2010. The city covers one square mile and is crossed by unnamed streams that flow westward to the Little Cedar River.
