Allentown is a city located across four counties in central Georgia—primarily in Wilkinson County, with portions extending into Bleckley, Laurens, and Twiggs counties. The town took its name in 1891 when the Macon, Dublin & Savannah Railroad was extended to the area. John Allen, an early postmaster, lent his surname to the growing settlement, which was officially incorporated in 1901. The city sits along U.S. Route 80, positioned approximately ten miles southeast of Jeffersonville and twenty miles northwest of Dublin. Interstate 16 also passes through the southern edge of Allentown, providing access to Macon thirty-one miles to the northwest and Savannah one hundred thirty-four miles to the southeast.
Over the past two decades, Allentown's population has fluctuated. The 2000 census recorded 287 residents, which declined to 169 by 2010 before recovering slightly to 195 in 2020. As of 2023, the majority of residents lived in the Wilkinson County portion of the city, with a smaller population in the Twiggs County section. The city covers approximately 4.6 square miles and drains into two separate river systems. The northern portion flows toward Devils Branch and ultimately the Oconee River watershed, while the southern area drains toward Little Rocky Creek and the same system.
