Del Mar, a beach city in San Diego County located on the Pacific coast, takes its Spanish name meaning "Of the Sea" from Ella Loop, wife of railroad official Theodore M. Loop who first settled the area in 1882. Loop and his wife found the location so appealing that when the California Southern Railroad was completed, they decided to stay rather than move on. In 1885, Loop partnered with Colonel Jacob Taylor, a prosperous rancher, to establish a seaside resort. Taylor purchased 338 acres of land with grand visions, even installing the first telephone line between Del Mar and his ranch in Peñasquitos. By 1888, the town had grown to about 25 homes, and a dedicated school was built to serve the sparsely populated area. However, development stalled after a kitchen fire destroyed Taylor's hotel and subsequent flooding devastated the region, leaving Del Mar with fewer than a hundred residents by century's end. The town's fortune changed in 1905 when the South Coast Land Company acquired the land and hired prominent Los Angeles architect John C. Austin to design the Stratford Inn, completed around 1910. The Tudor Revival style hotel attracted Hollywood's silent film stars, establishing Del Mar's reputation for elegance. This distinctive architecture spread throughout Old Del Mar, with Stratford Square built in 1927 and numerous Tudor-style commercial buildings following. In 1936, the San Diego County Fair found a permanent home at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, followed by the opening of the Del Mar Race Track in 1937, which became central to the city's identity. Del Mar incorporated in 1959 to preserve its small-town character and had a population of 3,954 as of the 2020 census.
