Ada Township is a civil township located in Kent County, Michigan, about three miles east of Grand Rapids. With a population of 14,388 at the 2020 census, Ada is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and serves as the corporate home of Alticor and its subsidiary companies Amway North America and Amway. The majority of the township is encompassed by the Forest Hills census-designated place, the largest and most-populated CDP in Michigan.
The history of Ada reaches back to the early nineteenth century, when the land was home to the Grand River Band of Ottawa led by Nebawnaygezhick. Rix Robinson, considered the first permanent colonial settler of Kent County, established a trading post in 1821 at the junction of the Grand and Thornapple Rivers. After the 1836 Treaty of Washington opened the region to European-American settlement, Robinson purchased hundreds of acres for the Ottawa people. Early settler Lucius Lyon arrived in 1826 and, recognizing the land's potential, developed the area and constructed a sawmill. Both Lyon and Robinson are credited as founders of Ada.
The village and township were named for Ada Smith, daughter of the first postmaster Sydney Smith and the first non-Native American child born in the village. A post office was established in 1837, and a plat was recorded in 1857. The Ada Covered Bridge, constructed across the Thornapple River in 1867, remains one of the few covered bridges still standing in Michigan and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
