Anvik is a small city in Alaska's Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, located west of the Yukon River at the mouth of the Anvik River, about 34 miles north of Holy Cross. The community is home to the Deg Hit'an people, whose native name for the place is Deloy Ges. The English name Anvik, meaning "exit" in Central Alaskan Yup'ik, became the standard designation, possibly deriving from early Russian explorers. The city is accessible by a public airport with a gravel runway located one mile southeast of downtown, and is connected to the Iditarod Trail by the Anvik Connector, a national side trail located 86 miles to the east. Anvik first appeared on the U.S. Census in 1880 as Anvik Station and Village with 95 residents, and incorporated as a city in 1969. Education in the community is provided by the Blackwell School, operated by the Iditarod Area School District. This remote Alaskan community maintains its connection to indigenous heritage while serving as a small hub in Alaska's interior.
