Apalachicola is a city and the county seat of Franklin County, Florida, located on the shore of Apalachicola Bay along the Gulf of Mexico. The city's name comes from the Apalachicola Province, which was centered along the Chattahoochee River in Alabama and Georgia during the seventeenth century. Derived from Hitchiti words meaning "people on the other side of the river," the name reflects the area's early indigenous heritage.
The region's recorded European history began in 1705 when the Spanish built a fort in the area. Between 1763 and 1783, it served as a British trading post called Cottonton at the mouth of the Apalachicola River. After the United States acquired Florida, the settlement gradually attracted more permanent residents and was incorporated as West Point in 1827 before receiving its current name in 1831.
By the nineteenth century, Apalachicola had become a thriving port community. Before railroads arrived in the later 1800s, it was the third-busiest port on the Gulf of Mexico, behind only New Orleans and Mobile. The town's waterfront business district was notably impressive, featuring continuous brick stores three stories high equipped with granite pillars. The city produced notable figures including botanist Alvan Wentworth Chapman, who settled here in 1847 and published his influential Flora of the Southern United States in 1860, and physician John Gorrie, who discovered the cold-air refrigeration process and patented an ice machine in 1850.
Today, Apalachicola has a population of 2,341 according to the 2020 census and remains connected to the region through U.S. 98 and the AN Railway.
