Apple Springs is an unincorporated community located in northeastern Trinity County, Texas, situated at the intersection of State Highway 94 and Farm to Market Roads 357 and 2501, approximately fifteen miles northeast of Groveton and twenty miles southwest of Lufkin. The community falls within the Huntsville micropolitan area.
Founded shortly after the Civil War as May Apple Springs, the town took its name from a nearby spring where May apples grew. A post office was established in 1884, the same year the community's first school opened with just twenty-eight students two years later. The community's location shifted when the Groveton, Lufkin and Northern Railway built tracks between Groveton and Vair. During World War I, Apple Springs had seventy-five residents and supported three general stores, a gin, a bank, and a cafe. After the railroad was abandoned in 1931, the community relocated to State Highway 94. The mid-1930s brought growth with twelve businesses and 150 residents. Population peaked at 285 in 1965 but then declined progressively. By 2000, the population had stabilized at 185 residents with twenty-one businesses.
The community experienced significant hardship on January 19, 1990, when a strong F3 tornado damaged approximately twenty homes, overturned and shifted a mobile home seventy feet, and snapped several power poles.
Today, Apple Springs is home to Apple Springs Independent School District, operating two schools serving approximately 140 to 165 students. The high school earned recognition from Texas Monthly in 2002 as one of the state's top ten high schools in its economic group.
