Archbold is a village located in Fulton County, Ohio, about forty miles southwest of Toledo. Founded in 1855 when the railroad was extended to that point, the village takes its name from John Archbald, a railroad promoter, though some traditions suggest it may derive from the names of two other railroad officials, Arch and Bald. A post office has operated in Archbold since its founding year. In 1983, the village earned designation as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Today, Archbold is home to Northwest State Community College and serves as a rural community with a population of 4,516 according to the 2020 census. The village encompasses 5.07 square miles total, with 4.93 square miles of land and 0.14 square miles of water.
The community's history includes a tragic chapter. On January 4, 1948, a farmer driving a tractor pulling a bobsleigh with thirteen children aboard attempted to cross an unguarded railroad crossing during a light snowstorm. Despite looking in all directions before proceeding, he found himself in the path of a New York Central Railroad passenger train traveling at approximately eighty miles per hour. Ten children were killed at the scene while three others survived with moderate injuries. The incident represented the largest loss of life in Fulton County history and drew national attention. A subsequent investigation by the Fulton County Police Department determined that the train engineer's failure of judgment was the primary cause of the accident.
