Arp is a small city in Smith County, Texas, situated within the Tyler metropolitan statistical area. According to the 2020 census, the city is home to 892 residents and covers a total area of 2.5 square miles. The area has deep historical roots, having been occupied by Caddoan peoples in pre-Columbian times. After the Cherokee War of 1839, the region was settled again by Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Creek Indians after 1845, and descendants of these tribes continue to live in Smith and Rusk counties today, forming the Mount Tabor Indian Community. The settlement itself went through several name changes before becoming Arp. Originally called Bissa, derived from the Choctaw and Chickasaw word for blackberry, it was later known as Jarvis Junction and then Strawberry, reflecting the fruit crops grown locally. The city eventually received its current name in honor of Bill Arp, the pen name of Georgia humorist Charles Henry Smith, who was nationally known in the late nineteenth century. Local strawberry producers also appreciated the brevity of the three-letter name, as it required less time when hand-marking their shipping crates. Today, Arp is served by the Arp Independent School District, which operates an elementary school, junior high school, and high school for the community.
