Asher is a town in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, situated at the intersection of U.S. Highway 177 and State Highway 39. According to the 2020 census, the town has a population of 370 residents spread across 0.8 square miles. Asher traces its roots to 1892, when George "Matt" Asher from Kentucky purchased land in Oklahoma Territory to establish his farm home. The post office was formally established on November 26, 1901, when George A. McCurry relocated the Avoca post office to the new settlement. Though Mr. Asher never lived in the town himself, the community was named in his honor as consideration for providing the land.
Early growth came through railroad development and land sales. In 1900, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway extended its branch to Asher, making the town a trade center for a fertile section of the South Canadian River valley. In 1903, The Jennings Company closed on one thousand business and residence lots, and factories began locating in the area. However, the nearby development of Seminole and Konawa diverted trade away from Asher. The resourceful community responded by constructing a bridge across the Canadian River, which the state incorporated into State Highway 18.
Asher's agricultural roots ran deep, though the town faced hardship as a cotton farming community. Boll weevil infestations and fires that destroyed the town's first two cotton gins created significant challenges.
