Bangs is a small city in Brown County in west-central Texas with a population of 1,540 according to the 2020 census. Located along U.S. Routes 67 and 84, the city sits nine miles west of Brownwood, the county seat, and eleven miles east of Santa Anna in Coleman County. The city covers 1.5 square miles and is entirely rural in character.
The town was named after Samuel Bangs, who received the land as recognition for his service as a printer during the Texas Revolution, though he reportedly never visited his namesake property. Bangs began to develop in 1886 when railroad tracks were laid from Brownwood to San Angelo with a depot in the town. That same year, a general store opened and a post office was established on May 24. The community grew steadily through the early twentieth century, incorporating in 1915 with 600 residents and 21 businesses. The following year, the city installed a water system and natural gas lines. In 1927, Bangs Independent School District was formed and eventually consolidated nine other school districts. Highway 67 was constructed through town in 1937, and post-World War II years brought new housing development. In 1948, when the population was 756, senatorial candidate Lyndon Johnson arrived by helicopter and was greeted by a crowd estimated at 700. The city has produced notable figures including Major League Baseball batting champion Debs Garms and country and Christian music artist Coffey Anderson.
