Batchtown is a small village located in Richwood Precinct within Calhoun County, Illinois. The community has a rich history rooted in the pioneering efforts of its early settlers. During the 1850s, the area was known as Richwoods, but residents soon began calling it Sam White's, named after a prominent merchant in Calhoun County. The village later became known as Batchelder Ville in honor of William Batchelder, a leading citizen who lived there during the 1860s. When a post office opened in 1879, the official name was shortened to Batchtown.
By the time of its incorporation, the village had developed into a thriving community with several stores and shops. William Batchelder was instrumental in this growth, owning and operating a corn mill that he eventually converted into a flour mill. He also served as a justice of the peace and merchant. Samuel White similarly contributed to the community's prosperity through his general store, which offered stock groceries, dry goods, shoes, hardware, and farm machinery. The village also became home to a Grand Army of the Republic post and the first Batchtown Methodist Church.
Today, Batchtown remains a small community with a population of 170 residents according to the 2020 census, down from 214 in 2010. The village covers 1.86 square miles and continues to serve as part of the Calhoun Community Unit School District 40.
