Battle Ground is a city in Clark County, Washington, located approximately eleven miles northeast of Vancouver and near the geographical center of the county. With a population of 20,743 at the 2020 census, the city has experienced substantial growth in recent decades, doubling its population between 2000 and 2010 to become the second-largest city in Clark County. As of 2023, the population has grown to 22,959.
The city's name originates from a significant historical event in 1855 involving the Klickitat peoples and the U.S. Army. Members of the Klickitat had been imprisoned at Vancouver Barracks, and when some escaped under Chief Umtuch's leadership heading north, an armed contingent led by Captain William Strong pursued them. The two groups met near present-day downtown Battle Ground and engaged in negotiations. During this standoff, Chief Umtuch was killed, reportedly by one of Captain Strong's soldiers. The Klickitats were allowed to bury their chief before returning to the Barracks. Settlers subsequently called the location Strong's Battle Ground, later shortened to Battle Ground. Two schools in the city were named after Captain Strong and Chief Umtuch.
Settlement began in 1886 when Augustus H. Richter established the town, which he platted in 1902. Battle Ground was officially incorporated on June 18, 1951. The city's modern development includes a community center opened in 2008 and a public library in 2009. Between 2000 and 2005, Battle Ground ranked fourth statewide for population growth among incorporated communities.
