Bauxite, located in Saline County in central Arkansas about fourteen miles southwest of Little Rock, takes its name from the ore that transformed the region. Bauxite ore was discovered in the area during the early 1890s and initially mined by the General Bauxite Company. In 1905, the Pittsburgh Reduction Company, an aluminum refining firm, purchased vast tracts of land after learning of the high-quality ore being shipped from the area. The company eventually incorporated as the Aluminum Company of America, known as ALCOA. During World War I, production surged dramatically, rising from 200,000 short tons in 1914 to 560,000 short tons by 1918. This growth brought multiple mining camps to the area, which often developed along racial and ethnic lines. When World War II erupted, production accelerated once again to meet the demand for refined aluminum needed for aircraft and military equipment, reaching 6,000,000 short tons annually by 1943. The city's population and infrastructure expanded significantly during this period to accommodate workers brought in from across the country. Production declined as the war ended, though ALCOA and Reynolds Metal Company continued refining bauxite in the area until Reynolds ceased operations in 1981. Bauxite was incorporated as a town in 1973 and had a population of 629 at the 2020 census. The community preserves its mining heritage through the Bauxite Museum, housed in a 1926 ALCOA community center that still serves the public today.
