The area's European settlement began in 1831 when Leon Tromblé built a log cabin on the east bank of the Saginaw River. Bay City was officially established in 1837 and incorporated as a city in 1865. The city's industrial legacy includes the Defoe Shipbuilding Company, which built naval vessels until 1975, and Industrial Brownhoist, known for manufacturing large industrial cranes.
