Beech Bluff is an unincorporated community located on the east-central edge of Madison County, Tennessee. The area's history stretches back centuries, beginning with the Chickasaw people, who left behind an earthwork that remains visible today. In 1852, a post office was established in the area, which was then also known as Homer and served as a summer resort destination. The community received its present name following the construction of a section of the Tennessee Midland Railway between 1888 and 1890. The name Beech Bluff derives from a large grove of native beech trees situated near a local bluff in the area. By 1897, the community's population had grown to approximately three hundred residents. Education has played an important role in Beech Bluff's development. A one-room schoolhouse was founded in 1885, eventually expanding into a high school that served the community for generations. However, the school closed in 1977 during desegregation. The building later became Beech Bluff Elementary before being converted into a recreation center in 2016, continuing to serve the community in a new capacity. The landscape surrounding Beech Bluff is characterized by deposits of loess, which have developed into brown or grayish brown silt loam soils. These soils are mapped as Grenada, Memphis, or Lexington series in areas with good drainage, and as Calloway series in somewhat poorly drained areas.
