Beverly is a small community in Bell County, Kentucky, situated in the scenic landscape of the Daniel Boone National Forest along the Red Bird River. The area's name carries an interesting history rooted in local heritage. The Red Bird post office was originally established in 1876 at the mouth of Cow Creek by postmaster Richard Wilkerson Asher, a storekeeper and preacher who served a modest community centered around a corn mill, school, and church. When Asher's daughter Amanda Jane inherited the post office after his death in 1884, she married William R. Knuckles. Her attempt to rename the office after her husband's family resulted in the misspelling "Nuckles" on the official forms. Following Amanda's death in 1890, her son John Beverly Knuckles eventually became postmaster. In 1911, the U.S. Postal Service requested a name change, and the office was officially renamed Beverly in honor of John Beverly Knuckles. The community developed further when John and Millard Knuckles, both landowners, offered their property in 1921 to build a school and hospital. This generous donation led to the establishment of the Red Bird Mission and Settlement School, built by the Women's Missionary Society of the Evangelical Church of Pennsylvania. The mission has grown significantly, operating schools, churches across multiple counties, and medical facilities that continue serving the region today. Beverly's post office remains open in the twenty-first century, testament to the community's enduring presence in eastern Kentucky.
