Billingsley is a small village in Autauga County, Alabama, located approximately 37 miles northwest of Montgomery and part of the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2020 census, the village had a population of 125 residents.
The community's history reflects the westward migration of early American settlers and the growth of the South. Originally called Cartersville after the W. W. Carter family, who established a grist mill, lumber company, and cotton gin, the settlement was renamed to honor Clement Billingsley, a Revolutionary War veteran from Virginia. When Billingsley died in 1844, his substantial assets, including land and enslaved African Americans, were divided among his children, strengthening the family's prominence in the county.
The railroad transformed Billingsley's fortunes. By the 1880s, the town had become a stop on a stagecoach route. In 1898, the Mobile and Ohio Railroad completed a line through town, sparking a construction and population boom. The expanded settlement soon supported six general stores and other businesses, while the local sawmill tripled its output. The town officially incorporated in 1901.
