Blandford is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, with a population of 1,215 at the 2020 census. Part of the Springfield metropolitan area, it was first settled in 1735, primarily by Scots-Irish families, and officially incorporated on November 10, 1741. The town was originally called New Glasgow by its settlers, who hoped to honor Glasgow, Scotland. However, Governor William Shirley, newly appointed to the Massachusetts province, disregarded their petition and instead named the town Blandford after the ship that brought him from England. This decision disappointed the settlers, as the people of Glasgow had promised them a church bell if they named their town after their city. The promised bell never arrived, though Glasgow Road near the center of town remains a reminder of these events.
Settlement came later to Blandford than to the more fertile lowlands along the Connecticut River. The town's early farmers faced hardscrabble subsistence conditions due to thin, rocky soil left by Pleistocene glaciation, though upland fields sometimes avoided unseasonal frosts. The Scots-Irish settlers were Presbyterian, unlike the English Puritans who had settled the nearby Pioneer Valley, creating significant ethnic, religious, and linguistic differences between the regions. Hugh Black arrived first in the fall of 1735, followed shortly by James Baird and many other families. The town's first meeting house, serving both religious and government purposes, was erected in 1740 and took sixty-five years to complete.
