Brundidge is the second-largest city in Pike County, Alabama, with a population of 2,073 as of the 2020 census. Founded prior to the Civil War by George C. Collier as a trading post and saloon called Collier's Store, the town was renamed around 1854 to honor James M. Brundidge, a prominent local citizen and founder of the Masonic lodge. During the Civil War, men from the area served in Company F, known as the Brundidge Guards, of the 15th Regiment Alabama Infantry.
The town grew as an agricultural center following the war, particularly after the Alabama Midland Railway established a depot there in 1889. This brought hotels and businesses to the city, and passenger trains like the South Wind once traveled through. Brundidge incorporated in 1893, and banking institutions soon followed, with the Brundidge Banking Company opening in 1900 and the First National Bank in 1904.
The city became a major peanut butter producer in the 1920s when Brundidge native Alonza E. Johnston opened a mill. His Johnston Oil Company shipped more than two million jars annually and also produced velvet bread and mayonnaise while operating warehouses, gins, and an ice plant. Though the business has ceased operations, the old Johnston Mill and General Store now serves as a museum and is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Today, Brundidge celebrates its peanut butter heritage with an annual Peanut Butter Festival held the last Saturday of October, featuring live music, a recipe contest, and a parade. The city's historic downtown contains a large number of antique stores.
