Bryan, located in the northwestern corner of Ohio about 53 miles southwest of Toledo, is the county seat of Williams County. Platted in 1840 by John A. Bryan, the city was incorporated as a village the following year and remained so until its reincorporation as a city in 1941. With a population of 8,729 according to the 2020 census, Bryan has maintained relatively stable growth over the decades.
The city's establishment as county seat came after Williams County was split from Defiance County. Though the village of Montpelier competed for the honor as a more centralized location, Bryan ultimately prevailed due to its greater industrial, commercial importance and higher population. Bryan's strategic location in northwestern Ohio connected it to broader historical events. A portion of Williams County north of the city was part of the Toledo War, a territorial dispute between Ohio and Michigan over the Toledo Strip. Ohio ultimately retained the land, while Michigan received compensation through western Upper Peninsula lands.
The city developed strong transportation infrastructure. The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, later part of the New York Central Railroad, began serving Bryan in 1869. On July 23, 1966, Bryan gained distinction as the midpoint for a record-setting rail speed run by the jet-powered M-497 Black Beetle, which achieved 183.68 mph, a record that endures today.
