Burbank is a city in Cook County, Illinois, with a population of 29,439 according to the 2020 census. Located less than two miles south of Chicago Midway International Airport, it borders Chicago's Ashburn neighborhood to the east and shares boundaries with Oak Lawn, Bridgeview, Bedford Park, and Hometown. The area remained largely agrarian and undeveloped through much of the nineteenth century, despite ambitious plans laid out by railroad investor A. B. Stickney in the late 1800s for a railroad transfer center that never came to fruition due to the economic depression of 1893. The 1920s brought real-estate developers who purchased farmland and built subdivisions, but drainage problems and inadequate water and sewage systems, combined with the Great Depression, kept the area largely empty until the 1950s. In 1952, the area became part of Stickney Township, which spurred rapid development. By 1960, the population had nearly tripled to 20,720. The area was incorporated as a city in 1970, partly to resist annexation by Chicago, and was named after Luther Burbank Elementary School, which had served the community since the 1930s. The city's population peaked in 1976 at 29,448. Today, Burbank covers 4.17 square miles and is served by Pace bus service connecting residents to destinations across the southwest Chicago area and south suburbs.
