Buxton is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Oregon, situated near Oregon Route 47. The area was first settled by Henry Buxton Jr. in 1884, and the town took its name from his family, including his father Henry Buxton, a pioneer who arrived in 1841. A post office was established on December 27, 1886, with Henry T. Buxton serving as the first postmaster. By the early 1900s, Buxton had grown into a thriving community of more than 2,000 residents, fueled by the logging industry and railroad construction. The Portland, Astoria & Pacific Railroad operated a station in the area above Mendenhall Creek. A new school building was completed around 1938, and in 1954, Buxton joined neighboring Manning and Banks to establish the Tri-City Rural Fire Protection District, now known as the Banks Fire District. The post office remained in operation until at least 1976.
Today, Buxton is home to several notable attractions. The iconic Buxton Trestle, a 700-foot-long railroad bridge built in 1920, crosses the Mendenhall Creek valley and has been converted for hiking and biking use as part of the Banks–Vernonia State Trail. A new fire station, constructed with locally-milled logs, opened in October 2020 along Highway 26. The community sits within a warm-summer Mediterranean climate region and will soon benefit from the planned 84-mile Salmonberry Trail, a hiking and biking route through the Oregon Coast Range. L. L. "Stub" Stewart Memorial State Park is located nearby, offering outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors.
