Developed as a bustling river port with steamboat traffic expanding through the 1850s, Cairo flourished in the decades following the Civil War. The completion of the United States Custom House in 1872, a Victorian structure designed by the nation's Supervising Architect, reflected the city's prosperity. At its height, Cairo's post office ranked as the third busiest in the United States. The city became a hub for railroad shipping and ferry operations, with nearly 250,000 railroad cars ferried across the river in as little as six months. However, transportation changes and industrial restructuring gradually bypassed Cairo. The population peaked at 15,203 in 1920 but declined significantly, reaching 1,733 by the 2020 census. Several historic blocks and the Old Customs House remain listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving Cairo's rich heritage.
