Camden is the county seat of Wilcox County, Alabama, with a population of 1,927 according to the 2020 census. The town was established in 1833 on land donated by Thomas Dunn from his plantation to serve as the county seat, replacing the earlier seat at Canton Bend. Originally named Barboursville in honor of United States Congressman Philip P. Barbour of Virginia, the town was renamed Camden in 1841 by local physician John D. Caldwell after his hometown in South Carolina. Dunn's Federal style house, built in 1825, remains the oldest documented structure in Camden.
The town developed around cotton cultivation and early industries including a brickyard, sawmill, and window fabricator. In 1844, townspeople founded the Wilcox Female Seminary and Female Institute, its distinctive red-brick Greek-Revival building constructed between 1845 and 1850. The equally impressive Wilcox County Courthouse, also built in Greek-Revival style, was completed in 1857 and now appears on the National Register of Historic Places.
Camden endured significant hardship during and after the Civil War. Though Union forces ransacked the courthouse in 1865, advance warning enabled officials to remove county records to safety. Devastating fires in 1869 and 1870 destroyed approximately two-thirds of the town, but recovery began during the 1880s, with the first bank incorporated in 1894. Mid-twentieth-century development brought economic benefits through a paper mill at Yellow Bluff and the Millers Ferry Lock and Dam on the Alabama River, which created the William Dannelly Reservoir as an important recreational resource.
