The area's residential and commercial development began following the completion of Canyon Lake in 1964. The population grew dramatically over subsequent decades, from just 100 residents in 1980 to 9,975 by 1990, when Canyon Lake first appeared as a census-designated place. By the 2020 census, the population had reached 31,124, reflecting continued growth and development. According to that same census, the median age was 51.4 years, with approximately seventy-five percent of residents living in rural areas. The majority of households were married-couple households at 58.6 percent.
