Cascade Summit is an unincorporated community in Klamath County, Oregon, situated on the west shore of Odell Lake near Shelter Cove, approximately thirty miles southeast of Oakridge. The community emerged as a railroad station when the Southern Pacific Railroad's Cascade Line was completed in 1925 and 1926. Named for its location just east of the summit tunnel through the Cascades, Cascade Summit reached its highest point on the railroad's crossing of the mountain range at an elevation of 4,852 feet. The community's post office operated from 1927 until its closure in 1980. During the Southern Pacific era, the station, siding, and wye made Cascade Summit a notable location, famous enough to serve as a backdrop for company publicity photographs. The site was particularly active during the 1930s and 1940s, when passenger trains stopped at the station daily. Though the railroad line is now owned by Union Pacific, only the siding remains from that era. The community was once home to Cascade Summit Lodge, which eventually burned down, though its foundation was still visible as of 1990. The region experiences a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with dry summers and no average monthly temperatures exceeding 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
