Cave Junction is a small city in Josephine County, Oregon, situated at the junction of Redwood Highway and Caves Highway, a location that inspired its name. With a population of 2,071 as of the 2020 census, the city lies in the Illinois Valley, approximately 30 miles southwest of Grants Pass. The area has a rich history stretching back thousands of years, when the Takelma Indians inhabited the valley. The most notable strike came in 1904, when an 18-year-old named Ray Briggs discovered gold on Sucker Creek at what became known as the Wounded Buck Mine. As gold mining declined in subsequent decades, residents turned to ranching, fishing, logging, and agriculture. The discovery of Oregon Caves in 1874 proved significant to the area's development. After President William Howard Taft established Oregon Caves National Monument in 1909, tourism infrastructure grew, eventually leading to Cave Junction's establishment in 1926 on land donated by Elwood Hussey. The city was officially incorporated in 1948 as the only incorporated area in the Illinois Valley. Following World War II, timber became the primary income source for residents. Population growth peaked in the 1970s but declined in the 1990s due to timber job losses resulting from spotted owl protection measures.
