Centre is the county seat of Cherokee County, Alabama, a city of 3,587 residents according to the 2020 census. The town's history is closely tied to the region's past. Cherokee County itself was established on January 9, 1836, named after the Cherokee people who once inhabited the area. Among the notable Cherokee who lived nearby was the famous chief Pathkiller, who resided in Turkeytown close to present-day Centre. When Cherokee County was first organized, Cedar Bluff served as the county seat, but in 1844 the designation moved to Centre because of its more central location within the county.
