Coalinga is a city in the Pleasant Valley of Fresno County in central California, located about eighty miles southeast of Salinas. The town traces its origins to 1888, when the Southern Pacific Railroad Company established it as a coaling station to fuel steam locomotives with coal from the northern foothills of Mount Diablo. The name evolved from "Coaling Station A" through local tradition, possibly gaining its distinctive final vowel through railroad signage. The first post office opened in 1899, and the city was incorporated in 1906. Throughout the twentieth century, Coalinga developed around oil production, with the Coalinga Oil Field becoming a major source of employment. The city faced unique infrastructure challenges in its early decades due to undrinkable natural well water, requiring water to be brought in by rail tanker from Armona until a reverse-osmosis system was installed mid-century. On May 2, 1983, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake devastated the community, destroying over three hundred buildings and causing major damage to nearly seven hundred more, though only one death was reported. Today, Coalinga's economy centers on agriculture, oil production operated by Chevron and Aera Energy, and two major institutional facilities: Pleasant Valley State Prison and Coalinga State Hospital, which opened in 2005. The city also became an early adopter of cannabis cultivation and distribution ordinances in 2016. As of the 2020 census, Coalinga had a population of 17,590.
