Founded in 1869 as an Indian trading post by Colonel James A. Coffey, the settlement was named when Coffey won a coin toss against surveyor Napoleon B. Blanton, who had been dispatched to lay out the town. The railroad's arrival in 1871 sparked growth, and the city was incorporated in 1873 after its initial charter was voided. Coffeyville experienced rapid development from 1890 to 1910, when its population grew sixfold following the discovery of natural gas and clay resources. During this era, the city became one of the nation's largest glass and brick manufacturing centers while also developing significant oil production and related industries. Many buildings from this prosperous period now appear on the National Register of Historic Places.
The city's history includes dramatic events. In 1892, four members of the Dalton Gang were killed during a failed bank robbery attempt, with three civilians and a local marshal also dying in the confrontation.
