Collierville sits in the southeast corner of Shelby County, about 30 miles east of Memphis, on a ridge between the Wolf River and Nonconnah Creek. The land was part of the Chickasaw hunting grounds until the Chickasaw Cession of 1818 opened it to settlement. In 1836, speculator Jesse R. Collier advertised lots in the Memphis Enquirer as "the Town of Collier," and the name stuck, although for years the town was also called Oak Grove and mistakenly "Colliersville."
Collierville was incorporated on February 7, 1850, and grew with the arrival of the Memphis and Charleston Railroad in the late 1850s; by 1860 it had about 500 residents. The Civil War brought ruin. In October and November 1863, Confederate forces twice attacked the Union garrison guarding the railroad here, and during the first battle General William T. Sherman escaped capture at Collierville Depot. By the end of the war, all but three structures in town had been burned or destroyed.
After the war, the town was rebuilt southwest of the original site around a park set aside as the public square, and it was incorporated again on February 17, 1870. The historic Town Square, surrounded by Victorian-era homes and churches, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2014 Parade magazine named it America's best Main Street.
