Columbia, Alabama, situated in the northeastern corner of Houston County along the Georgia state line, is a rural town with deep historical roots. Founded in 1820, Columbia flourished as a major trading center for the Wiregrass Region between 1822 and 1833, serving as Henry County seat during that period. Its location bordering the Chattahoochee River made it an important port-of-call for steamboats, earning it the name "Old Columbia" among travelers. The town was officially incorporated on April 29, 1880, and became the largest community in the area during the nineteenth century.
The late 1800s brought industrial development to Columbia. The town received its first cotton textile mill in 1891 and its first electric plant in 1892. Electric street lights followed in 1900, and an electric utility company established service in 1914. However, Columbia's prominence as a principal trade center declined when the Alabama Midland Railway bypassed the town in favor of Dothan, and as railroads gradually replaced riverboat freight trade.
Despite this shift, Columbia sustained itself as a thriving farming community through the mid-twentieth century and remains one of the area's oldest continuously operating municipalities. Today, with a 2020 census population of 690, Columbia is part of the Dothan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town preserves its heritage through landmarks including the Old Columbia Jail, erected in the early 1860s and now a museum, and the Purcell-Killingsworth House, a Victorian mansion placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
