Comanche is a small city located in Stephens County in southwest Oklahoma, situated in rolling prairie land dotted with oil fields, ranches, farms, pecan orchards, and timbered areas. According to the 2020 Census, the city had a population of 1,378 residents.
The area's history stretches back to the Louisiana Purchase, and was later designated as Indian Territory in 1855 for the Five Civilized Tribes. Comanche became part of the Chickasaw Nation, known as Comanche, Indian Territory, until Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907. The city itself has an interesting origin story. Early settlers established a community called Tucker north of the present site, but when the Rock Island Railroad arrived in 1892, Indian landowner Johnny D. Wilson donated land for the city at the railroad location. The Tucker post office relocated there in 1893. Though some wanted to name it Wilson Town and others called it Border Queen because of its large annual celebrations, carnivals, and Indian activities, Wilson insisted the city be named Comanche in honor of the Comanche Indians who roamed the region. The city was officially incorporated on November 23, 1898. Historically, Comanche sat along a significant cattle trail, with herds driven from Texas through Indian Territory to Kansas for eastern shipment. Portions of this historic trail remain visible today. The city encompasses 4.6 square miles and is served by the Comanche Public School system and a nearby Cameron University branch in Duncan.
