Founded in 1919 by the Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corporation, a subsidiary of the New York Central Railroad, the town was named to honor Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad's founder. Vanderbilt earned his "Commodore" title through his early work as a riverboat owner.
Commodore was designed as a model town, setting it apart from typical coal mining communities of the era. The Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corporation constructed worker housing from concrete block rather than wood and equipped homes with indoor toilets, luxuries uncommon in neighboring mining towns. The community also featured a sewer system, further distinguishing it from surrounding areas. Engineer Paul Gill designed the town and its initial buildings. Street names reflected the company's leadership, honoring President F.E. Herriman, Vice President John Fisher, Assistant to the President H.B. Douglas, General Manager A.J. Musser, and General Superintendent H.J. Hinterleitner.
The town's historical significance was recognized when the Commodore Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 26, 1994, encompassing ninety-four contributing buildings.
