Copper Harbor is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located at the northern tip of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula in Keweenaw County, within Grant Township. With a population of 136 as of the 2020 census, it stands as the northernmost permanently populated community in Michigan. The name comes from the harbor itself, which earned its title from a green copper-bearing vein visible in a rock at Hayes Point, known to early voyageurs as la roche verte. This natural landmark became particularly significant when the harbor served as a port for shipping copper during the mid-nineteenth century mining boom.
The area's history is rooted in the Ojibwe people, who inhabited the Keweanaw Peninsula before European settlement. Following the 1842 Treaty of La Pointe, which took effect in 1843, the Ojibwe ceded the western Upper Peninsula to the United States. Captain Walter Cunningham, appointed by the Department of War as a Special Agent, established the first mineral land agency for the entire Lake Superior District in Copper Harbor in spring 1843, operating from the Government House on Porter's Island. Mining operations began in 1844 when the Pittsburgh and Boston Copper Harbor Mining Company, formed by John Hayes of Cleveland, started excavating near Hayes Point. The company struck rich deposits in 1845, and the mines became among Michigan's first mineral operations. Though other mines followed, including the Central and Cliff mines, copper resources were largely exhausted by 1870.
Today, Copper Harbor attracts visitors year-round, drawing on its natural environment and attractions including Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, the northern terminus of US Highway 41, and the historic Copper Harbor Lighthouse.
