Cottonwood Falls is the county seat and largest city in Chase County, Kansas, with a population of 851 as of the 2020 census. Situated along the south side of the Cottonwood River south of Strong City, the town sits in the scenic Flint Hills of the Great Plains. The area's first permanent settlement began in 1854 when Indian trader Seth Hayes established a cattle ranch on the Cottonwood River near Diamond Spring Creek. After Chase County was officially organized in 1859, Cottonwood Falls became the temporary county seat. The town's development accelerated with the arrival of additional settlers between 1856 and 1858, the establishment of the first post office in 1858, and the construction of the distinctive French Renaissance style Chase County Courthouse in 1873. That same era saw the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reach the area. Through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the surrounding region remained primarily devoted to farms and cattle ranches. The city has endured significant flooding throughout its history, most notably during the Great Flood of 1951. Today, Cottonwood Falls preserves its heritage through five listings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Chase County Courthouse, which remains the oldest courthouse in continual use in Kansas and among the oldest west of the Mississippi River.
