Crane is an unincorporated town in northeastern Harney County, Oregon, situated northeast of Malheur Lake along Oregon Route 78. The community takes its name from two prominent local features: Crane Creek and Crane Creek Gap, which marks the pass between the Harney Basin and the South Fork Malheur River drainage basin. Crane Creek is believed to be named for the sandhill crane, once abundant in eastern Oregon.
The town's history reflects the transformative power of railroad development. After the Union Pacific Railroad reached from Ontario in 1916, Crane's post office was reopened and the community flourished as a livestock shipping point until the railroad extended to Burns in 1924. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, roughly 300 people lived in Crane, supporting five restaurants, four hotels, three garages, two general merchandise stores, and various other businesses including a bank, newspaper, and movie theater. However, a series of destructive fires, with the most significant occurring in 1938, ended this prosperous era.
Today, Crane is home to 116 residents according to the 2020 census. The community has effectively reorganized around Crane Union High School, a boarding school serving a large rural district. The school has become central to the town's identity and purpose. Current businesses are modest compared to the town's heyday, including a post office, a combined gas station and café with tavern, and a farm supply store. Located 29 miles southeast of Burns, the county seat, Crane remains a small but enduring settlement in Harney County's rural landscape.
