Cuba City is a community located in Grant and Lafayette counties in southwestern Wisconsin, with a population of 2,138 according to the 2020 census. The city's history began in 1836 when John Amie Merle and Mathais Comstock purchased 160 acres of land from the American Government. The first structure was built in 1846 by Jack Deboard, who is recognized as the city's first settler. The community was originally intended to be named Yuba City, but after discovering that name was already taken elsewhere, residents selected Cuba City instead. The village incorporated in Grant County in 1894, became a city in 1925, and later annexed into Lafayette County between 1960 and 1970. Today, Cuba City is nicknamed "The City of Presidents" because of presidential banners displayed along Main Street. The city is also notable for education, home to Cuba City High School, which earned a National Blue Ribbon Award in 2007. The school's Varsity Women's Basketball team has won the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament more times than any other team since the tournament began in 1976. Located on State Highway 80, Cuba City spans 1.08 square miles, with most of the community situated in Grant County and only a small portion in Lafayette County.
