Curtis is an unincorporated community nestled in Mackinac County's Portage Township in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, about sixty-five miles west of the Mackinac Bridge. The area was originally home to the Chippewa people before John Lee arrived in 1884 and became the first white settler, famously sharing a hut with Chief Saw-Naw-Quato for eighteen months. After the federal government granted land patents in 1886, Lee and other settlers established what was initially called Portage, named for its location along the narrowest stretch of land between Manistique Lake and South Manistique Lake.
The community was renamed Curtis in 1905 when a post office was established, honoring state senator William L. Curtis, who served from 1902 to 1906. By 1907, Curtis had grown to around seventy-five residents with two saloons, stores, and hotels. That year brought the Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad, which constructed a depot connecting Curtis to lumber communities across the Upper Peninsula. However, this prosperity proved short-lived when the railroad abandoned the depot in 1910, causing the population to drop to just twenty-five residents by 1913. The community adapted by turning to farming and fishing, ultimately sustaining itself through the abundant hunting and fishing opportunities provided by its surrounding lakes.
Today, Curtis remains a popular tourist destination surrounded by numerous lakes and outdoor recreation areas. The Erickson Center for the Arts serves the community with cultural and educational programming. The post office, continuously operating since 1905, still serves the area under ZIP code 49820.
