Custer is a village located in Mason County in central Michigan, situated three miles east of Scottville and eleven miles east of Ludington, the county seat. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 272 residents. The area has deep historical roots, with Native Americans inhabiting the region long before European settlement. A significant battle between the Mascouten and Odawa peoples occurred on the Pere Marquette River near present-day Custer, resulting in thousands of Mascouten deaths and giving the river its original name, "Notipekago," meaning "heads on sticks." The United States established an Indian reservation at the site in 1855. Custer itself was platted in 1878 and incorporated as a village in 1895, taking its name from George Armstrong Custer. The village experienced notable growth beginning around 1912 when a Lithuanian community began settling there, with further expansion following World War I. In 1925, Joseph T. Sanders founded Sanders Meats in the village, initially delivering products via Ford Model T, eventually expanding to serve customers and businesses up to one hundred miles away across four generations of family ownership. St. Mary's Catholic Church was established in 1933, and in 1966 a new church building was completed, designed by architect Jonas Mulokas with architectural elements shared with an award-winning church design in Queens, New York. Today, Custer remains a small rural community in Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
