Darien is a coastal town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, situated on Long Island Sound between Stamford and Norwalk. As the smallest town on Connecticut's Gold Coast, it serves as a commuter hub for New York City, with two Metro-North Railroad stations connecting residents to Grand Central Terminal.
The area's earliest European settlements date to around 1641, when men from the New Haven, Wethersfield, and Norwalk colonies began clearing land. The First Congregational Church, built by the Middlesex Society of the Town of Stamford in 1739, still stands at its original location on Brookside Road and the Boston Post Road. During the American Revolution, Tories raided Darien multiple times, at one point imprisoning twenty-six men from the parish for five months, including Reverend Moses Mather. The town was officially incorporated as Darien in 1820, taking its name from the Isthmus of Darien, suggested by a sailor who had traveled there. The naming resolved a dispute among residents who could not agree on a replacement for Middlesex Parish.
Historically a white Protestant community through much of the twentieth century, Darien has evolved into a multi-ethnic town with residents of diverse religions and backgrounds. The town's early twentieth-century exclusive policies reflected the segregated suburban practices of the era. Today, Darien remains a significant residential community, home to notable landmarks including the Stephen Tyng Mather Home, a National Historic Landmark, and the Frederick J. Smith House, designed by Richard Meier in 1967.
