Darragh is an unincorporated community in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, situated along Pennsylvania Route 136 about a mile west of Arona. Like many towns in the region, Darragh's story is rooted in the coal industry that shaped western Pennsylvania's economy and landscape. The Madison Coal Gas Company of Greensburg established the community in 1890 to support operations at the nearby Madison coal mine. Over time, Darragh became the operational hub for the Keystone Coal and Coke Company's mining ventures in the Little Sewickley Creek area, which included four mines: Madison, Arona, Sewickley, and Keystone Shaft. At their peak, these mines provided work for approximately one thousand people, making Darragh a thriving center of activity. The community's population reached its height near the end of World War I, when coal production at the four Keystone mines hit record levels. The post office, established on July 21, 1892, served residents with the ZIP code 15625. However, like many coal towns, Darragh experienced decline as the mining industry contracted. By 1925, three of the four mines had closed their operations. The Keystone Shaft mine, the last of the four, shut down in the mid-1930s, and by 1938, the Keystone Coal and Coke Company had withdrawn entirely from the area. Today, Darragh remains an unincorporated community, a quiet reminder of the region's industrial past.
