Depew is a village in Erie County, New York, situated within the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area and straddling the towns of Lancaster and Cheektowaga. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 15,178. Named after Chauncey Depew, a politician and one of the original investors who purchased the land, Depew was incorporated on July 23, 1894.
The village's rapid development began in 1892 when the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company selected the site as a permanent location for its shops and auxiliary establishments, breaking ground on May 17, 1892. This decision sparked a general real estate boom in the vicinity. The railroad shops opened on April 1, 1893, with forty employees, and by the close of that year, major industrial establishments including the National Car Wheel Works, the Gould Coupler Company, and the Union Car Company had been completed or were under construction. By February 1895, the village had grown to a population of 1,814, with approximately five hundred dwellings erected and major establishments employing 2,500 men.
The early community developed quickly, with essential services and institutions established in 1893 and 1894, including water works, fire companies, schools, and churches. The Depew Improvement Company played a significant role in the village's growth by donating school and church sites. On January 17, 2017, village residents voted to maintain Depew's incorporation, defeating a proposal to dissolve into the surrounding towns by a margin of 3,006 to 1,165.
