Dillon Beach is a small census-designated place in Marin County located 3.25 miles west of Tomales at the mouth of Tomales Bay. With a 2020 population of 246 residents, this quiet coastal community sits at an elevation of 89 feet. The area's name honors George Dillon, an Irishman who arrived there with his wife Mathilda in 1868 and recognized its potential as a destination. In 1888, Dillon built an 11-bedroom hotel, restaurant, and general store that still operates today as Dillon Beach Resort. Early visitors came to explore the coastline, fish, and dig clams from Tomales Bay while traveling toward the redwood forests to the north.
The Coast Miwok people had inhabited the area long before European settlement, with villages including one around the local feature known as Sand Point. In the 1850s, Tom Wood worked in the region, employing local natives in grain harvesting while attempting to protect them from exploitation by foreign traders. Tom's Point, immediately south of Dillon Beach, bears his name.
When Dillon sold his holdings in 1903, the new owner John Keegan agreed the beach would always retain Dillon's name. Subsequent owners planted eucalyptus trees and developed the property as a resort destination. By 1942, the Lawson family had taken control, operating both the resort and Lawsons Landing, a campground that remains family-operated today. During World War II, military forces commandeered cottages and monitored the coastline against feared Japanese invasion. The marine biology College of the Pacific operated in the area from 1933 into the 1980s, leaving only its concrete foundation behind.
