Dimondale is a small village nestled in Eaton County, Michigan, located within Windsor Charter Township and serving as a suburb of nearby Lansing. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 1,134 residents.
The area has deep roots in Michigan history. The Potawatomi people maintained a permanent camp along the Grand River in the Dimondale area before white settlement began in the 1830s. Relations between settlers, many from New York and New England, and the local Potawatomi were generally cordial, with residents even deeding ten acres of land near the river to the local Indians until the Potawatomi were forced westward by the Indian Removal Act.
The village itself was founded by Isaac M. Dimond, who arrived in 1848 and began constructing a dam in 1850 on the Grand River near Silver Creek. By 1852, the dam was completed and a sawmill operated. Dimond added a grist mill in 1856, and on August 6 of that year, the village was officially surveyed and platted as Dimondale. The village's distinctive street layout runs northeast to southwest and northwest to southeast, creating a roughly diamond-shaped border on maps. A post office established in the area was transferred and renamed to Dimondale in 1872. The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway arrived in 1878, and by 1880, the settlement boasted seven shops including mills and machine shops. Dimondale incorporated as a village in 1906.
The village gained national recognition in the 1960s and 1970s as the "Horseshoe Capital of the World," with the Dimondale Horseshoe Club founded in 1964 hosting the Michigan state tournament in 1965.
