Douglas is a community on Douglas Island in southeastern Alaska, situated directly across the Gastineau Channel from downtown Juneau. Known by the Tlingit name Sayéik, the island was originally used seasonally by the Auke and Taku peoples rather than as a year-round settlement. The community's modern history began in 1880 when gold was discovered in nearby Juneau, sparking a rush that led to the founding of both Douglas and the mining town of Treadwell in 1881. Douglas quickly developed its own businesses, school, and post office, while a railroad and boardwalk connected it to Treadwell. During this prosperous era, the Treadwell power plant supplied electricity to all three communities and the Alaska-Juneau Gold Mine until 1944.
The town has endured significant hardships, including devastating fires in 1911, 1927, and 1937, with the last claiming the homes of six hundred of seven hundred residents. Despite these setbacks, Douglas rebuilt and persevered. The 1917 cave-in of the Treadwell mine marked a turning point, eventually leading Douglas to become the dominant community on the island. In 1935, the opening of the Douglas Bridge simplified transportation to Juneau. The city was formally incorporated in 1902 and remained independent until 1970, when voters approved a merger with Juneau and the surrounding borough, creating the present-day City and Borough of Juneau. Today, Douglas is home to about three thousand people and hosts Perseverance Theatre, Alaska's only professional theater company.
