Dover, located nine miles north of Kingfisher in Kingfisher County, Oklahoma, is a small rural community with deep roots in the state's frontier history. The area around Dover was originally ideal for cattle grazing, and by 1884 all available land had been leased to cattlemen. The Red Fork Traders' Ranch, established near the Chisholm Trail, became instrumental in the town's founding. When the Land Run of 1889 opened the territory to settlers, the trading post was well-positioned to serve the incoming farmers. The Rock Island railroad built a track through the ranch and constructed a bridge across the Cimarron River in October 1889, spurring the growth of a settlement initially called Red Wing. On March 1, 1890, a post office was established and renamed the community Dover, after the English city. The town grew steadily, reaching approximately 150 residents by 1893 and about 500 by 1910.
Dover's place in American outlaw history is notable. On April 3, 1895, the Wild Bunch held up a Rock Island train there, unable to open a safe containing fifty thousand dollars in army payroll but robbing passengers instead. This marked the gang's final robbery as an organized unit. The town also endured tragedy in 1906 when a temporary railroad bridge across the Cimarron River collapsed beneath a northbound train, killing an uncertain number of people. More recently, a tornado struck on May 3, 1999, destroying roughly one-third of Dover and killing one resident while injuring eleven others. As of the 2020 census, Dover has a population of 400 residents.
